The AMS Postdoctoral Fellowship provides support to promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. Candidates should be embarking on a period of full-time post-PhD degree studies and wish to add to their experience by engaging in research in Canada or abroad. The fellowships are intended for emerging scholars to complete work already started on projects featuring the study, analysis, and interpretation of past practices, philosophies, and/or epistemologies related to human health, health care, and/or disease or the education of health professionals, or to begin a new project in the field.


The following criteria will be used to evaluate the AMS Postdoctoral Fellowship Award applications. The proposal must demonstrate:


To apply for an AMS Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Principal Investigator (PI) must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident AND meet the following requirements:

  • Meet a minimum commitment of 75% of your time in the research fellowship role proposed in the application
  • Have confirmed a primary supervisor located at the university where the applicant will be based during the fellowship.
  • At the time of application, hold a PhD or expect to complete all requirements of the degree before December 31, 2020.
  • Have not completed a PhD more than 3 years prior to the competition deadline. (The date of completion is the date on which all requirements of the degree have been met, including successful defense and submission of the corrected copy of the dissertation.)

Special Eligibility Considerations

  • If a prospective applicant has experienced a serious interruption or delay in pursuing their career since completion of the PhD that would make them ineligible for this fellowship, exemptions to the degree completion date requirement will be considered on an individual basis on the provision of relevant information. Contact the Manager, Research Programs for more information.
  • Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible. Individuals who are seeking to hold their awards outside of Canada must provide proof of Canadian Citizenship or Canadian Permanent Residency.

Funding Amount and Duration

  • A maximum of a $45,000 stipend plus $2,500 research and travel allowance will be issued for each fellowship.
  • The awards may begin on the first of any month between September 1, 2020 and September 1, 2021, and cannot be longer than one year in duration.

Register in the Grants Management System (GMS)

Applications will be submitted via an online Grants Management System (GMS).

Review Process

Research Nova Scotia staff will assess applications to determine whether they are complete and meet the eligibility criteria.A peer review panel will review applications in accordance with RNS’s peer review guidelines and the assessment criteria outlined below.

Assessment Criteria

The following criteria will be used to evaluate the AMS Postdoctoral Fellowship Award applications. The proposal must demonstrate:

The aim and important of the endeavour (20%)

  • Originality and potential significance of the proposed program of work.

The plan to achieve excellence (30%)

  • Feasibility of the proposed program of work
  • Appropriateness of the intended place of tenure
  • Effectiveness of the overall support provided by the host institution for research training and career development
  • Appropriateness of the supervisor identified

The expertise to succeed (50%)

  • Fellowships, scholarships or other awards obtained
  • Previous research experience and/or publications
  • Timely completion of doctoral studies, taking into account the nature of the program and any related personal circumstances that may have delayed the applicant’s academic career
