Bernie is committed to advancing the priorities of the people of Nova Scotia. He started his government career as Deputy Minister of the Office of Planning and Priorities and Senior Executive Advisor to the Executive Council Office. More recently he served as Deputy Minister of the Office of Strategy Management.

Before joining government, Bernie was a leader in the private sector for 26 years, including as Managing Partner and CEO of McInnes Cooper. Bernie graduated from Dalhousie University in 1988 and was admitted to the Nova Scotia bar in 1989 and the New Brunswick bar in 1993. In 2017, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel.

In November 2021, Bernie joined the National Partnerships team at Mitacs as a Senior Advisor with responsibility for Atlantic Canada. Mitacs is a not-for-profit organization originally formed in 1999 to drive innovation in Canada, connect talented researchers and students to the innovation process, and support international research exchanges. Mitacs supports the innovation process—taking ideas from inception to impact—by connecting post secondary research to the real-world solutions needed for Canadian society to flourish. The National Partnership team builds domestic Canadian government relationships and works with other teams at Mitacs to support university, private sector and community relations.
