Dr. Steven Beyea Receives 2023 Public Impact Award

HALIFAX, NS – On November 22, Dr. Steven Beyea, Innovation Advisor at IWK Health, was presented with the Public Impact Award at the 21st Annual Discovery Awards. The award was sponsored and presented by Research Nova Scotia.

The Public Impact Award is awarded to a researcher whose research has benefited the well-being of the province and people of Nova Scotia. The recipient’s work intentionally responds to the needs of society, solves a problem, manages a risk, or creates an opportunity for Nova Scotians.

“I’m proud of the work we do because it’s having an impact on the province’s patients today,” says Dr. Beyea. “I would very much like to thank Research Nova Scotia as I can personally draw a straight line between the work that they fund and differences made in the lives of Nova Scotians.”

Dr. Beyea is the Innovation Strategy Advisor and a Research Scientist at IWK Health. He is also a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Dalhousie University. Dr. Beyea and his team are leveraging their medical imaging research program to improve MRI accessibility and diagnostics in an emergency setting. By facilitating access to novel medical technology, his work has not only led to the installation of cutting-edge technologies in local hospitals, they’re poised to improve diagnostics, reduce wait times, and in some cases, eliminate the need for secondary surgeries.

With a focus on medial imaging, Dr. Beyea is working with an interdisciplinary, collaborative team of research scientists, physicians, front-line health care workers, and engineers to improve the speed and quality of diagnoses for our province’s patients. They are attracting partners from around the world and creating next generation solutions to our health care problems.

Finalists for this year’s Public Impact Award also included Professor Jennifer Llewellyn, Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law, and Dr. Sara Kirk from Dalhousie University.

“These finalists are not only fantastic researchers, they have found their publics and are driven to help them succeed,” added Stefan Leslie, CEO of Research Nova Scotia.
