Research Nova Scotia (RNS) is awarding $27 million to four projects through its Focused Research Investments (FRI) initiative. This is RNS’s largest investment to date and its most significant in community-engaged, outcomes-driven research.
The four projects are:
Etuaptmu’k W’loti: Using Mi’kmaw Knowledge to Create Health & Wellness Solutions
IWK Health/Tajikeimɨk, $7 million
Improve access to culturally safe health and healing experiences for Mi’kmaw children and youth across Mi’kma’ki.
Homeward Bound: Enhancing Healthcare, Housing, and Social Support for Aging Rural Nova Scotians
Cape Breton University, $12.4 million
Enable aging rural Nova Scotians to stay in the home they choose through coordinated healthcare, housing, and social supports.
Unifying Networks to Innovate (UNITE): A Whole of System Approach for Youth Mental Health
Dalhousie University, $6.5 million
Advance system-wide innovations for more supportive, effective, and equitable approaches to youth mental health and addictions care in Nova Scotia.
Creating Integrated Restorative Communities for Locally Engaged Solutions (CIRCLES-NS)
Community Interest Company (CIC) in collaboration with Dalhousie University, $1 million
Create pathways to healthier communities and better quality of life for Nova Scotians by generating the resources and support needed to address local issues together.
“Research Nova Scotia developed and launched Focused Research Investments to pursue discovery on important matters that are timely, relevant, and actionable for those who need it,” says Stefan Leslie, CEO of RNS. “The researchers funded through FRIs are driven to search for answers to some of Nova Scotia’s most urgent questions, devoting their expertise in service of their communities.”
Each research team worked with communities to build a research plan that is focused on that community’s needs. Those communities will be active participants in the projects, and RNS will continue to engage with the teams as a collaborator and supporter.
“I’m pleased to see funding awarded to these recipients through the Focused Research Investments initiative,” said Brendan Maguire, Minister of Advanced Education. “The research teams are advancing important projects to address provincial priorities. I look forward to seeing the plans come to life and how they will benefit Nova Scotians.”
